Episode 2: Why should nonprofits partner with local solar contractors?

This month, we welcome solar contractors Dan Hancock and Travis Moller. They compare the nuances and advantages unique to nonprofits who would like to pursue solar energy solutions.

Aside from securing a source of capital to finance their solar installation, nonprofits must consider the right solar contractor for the engineering design, procurement of the equipment, and installation of the solar array.

At Mission Energy, we help nonprofits collaborate with solar contractors who are local to them in order to support their local economy and foster local working relationships. We are currently working on projects with both Dan and Travis.

Dan Hancock is the Senior Commercial Project Developer at StraightUp Solar in St Louis, MO.

He says, “If we can help them [nonprofits] reduce their energy bill, we make them a more viable nonprofit. So, whatever their mission is, for that community, solar is always going to help them.”

Travis Moller is the Director of Business Development for Utility and C&I at Freedom Solar Power, based in Austin, TX.

In his experience he notes, “The unique aspect of working with a nonprofit... is that it [solar] aligns so well with their mission, and it allows them to lower their operating costs and apply those funds directly to their long-term mission.”

Additionally, Dan and Travis shine light on:

  • 3:00 - Solar incentives for nonprofits: How do the utilities markets in different states affect financing options?

  • 7:10 - Buying in bulk: How do economies of scale help finance a project?

  • 8:40 - Team effort: How do contractors guide non-profits to make an informed decision?

  • 10:34 - Roof concerns: Does the rooftop condition matter before looking into solar panels?

  • 12:56 - Beyond rooftops: Are there options for a solar installation if the rooftop is not ideal?
